William
Holden had a studio where he built artistic fountains like the ones
shown here. Having a welder and metal working tools he could make functional
contraptions. When he needed a paper towel holder in his kitchen that
mounted on the side of his refrigerator, he came up with a mechanism
to help tear sheets. It worked so well he filed for the patents
and went from hungry artist to starving inventor.
These days concepts
are drawn with 3-D CAD modeling software. Professional prototypes are
made and we typically license the patent rights for humble royalties.
